Welcome to the School Zone, the column dedicated to the students, teachers, organizations, classes, and events of R.D. Parker Collegiate. The goal is to keep parents and students informed while still giving a students' perspective. Let's start off with what has happened so far this year.

As per the normal, the school year started off at Orientation, which happens one day before the official school year. Students go to the high school for approximately an hour or two and have an assembly with the rest of their grade. The assembly highlights some of the things coming throughout the year, such as sports and for the Grade 12's the coming commitees.

Old and new rules are also discussed and the students are also introduced to the new staff. After the assembly students go and buy an agenda and get their schedule. That is basically what happens on Orientation Day.

September is usually a slow month for events, which is probably best considering the long summer break. The next event was picture day. For picture day what typically happens is they call the students by grade over the intercom, and the entire grade goes down and gets their pictures taken. Its' a nice break from tough classes, but students are required to go back to their class after their picture is taken.

The last major event to happen this September was Career Day on Sept. 28. On Career Day, students are taken down with their class to look at the different booths set up. There are booths from different universities and colleges, the BRHA, among others. They are there to give information to all of the students, not just Grade 12's.

The students can check out things that interest them, find out requirements and get just plainly get informed. This is a good time to ask any questions about universities or colleges students are looking at, or even the military who had a booth this year. If you're a student looking to open a small business after graduation there was information there for you as well.

Now for events most parents definitely wouldn't have heard of. The Youth Aboriginal Council is holding elections for president very soon, good luck to all of the candidates! Congratulations to the newly formed Drama Students Association and welcome back to the Music Students Association. More news on these groups and others with any events they hold will be available at a later time.

That's all for this column, but more will be following. So until next time I bid you adieu.
