MP Report

Focusing on the unique needs of all our communities

Each and every one of our communities in Northern Manitoba is unique. We need to make sure we focus in on the unique needs of each community.

This was the message I gave to the 39th annual general meeting of the Northern Association of Community Councils.

The NACC brings together the many Northern Affairs communities in the province.

The mission statement of the NACC sums up its role. It aims to be a "meaningful and effective advocacy group." It aims to improve the quality of life in Northern Association Communities by having positive, pro-active meetings with ministers and cabinet on issues affecting our communities and to inform and involve community councils and residents in our progress."

The NACC recognizes the unique nature of its communities when it states, "We believe that all communities are unique and that their needs and interests should be recognized." That is exactly what I have been consistently saying as MP.

As NDP MP for Churchill I am proud to represent many Northern Affairs communities.

In the Eastern region I represent Berens River, Bissett, Island Lake, Little Grand Rapids, Manigotagan, Red Sucker Lake and Seymourville. In the Northern region I represent Brochet, Cormorant, Cross Lake, Easterville, God's Lake Narrows, Grand Rapids, Granville Lake, Herb Lake Landing, Ilford, Moose Lake, Nelson House, Norway House, Oxford House, Pikwitonei, Sherridon, South Indian Lake, Thicket Portage, and Wabowden.

Concerns in the communities range from healthcare and education to transportation and infrastructure. Although there are many common themes there are differences. In terms of transportation some communities have road access while others have only train or air service.

The NACC has played a major role in lobbying for improvements in the Northern Affairs communities. The announcement of significant funding for infrastructure in several Northern Affairs communities under the Federal Provincial program is a clear example of the difference the NACC is making on many of these concerns.

The NACC has also been a key player in the development of the Northern Healthy Foods Initiative. The main objective of the project is to increase healthy living, promote diabetes awareness and increase community involvement. Under the initiative many community gardens have been established in order to increase accessibility to healthy foods, increase physical activity and involvement within the community. The main role of NACC is to readily provide and obtain resources according to the needs voiced by the communities.

I have worked closely with NACC President Reg Meade and NACC communities on many Northern issues. As MP I will be continuing to fight for the kind of facilities and services our Northern communities deserve.
