To the Editor:

The Thompson Regional Community Centre (TRCC) and University College of the North (UCN) are neighbours, collaborators and care about the safety of their staff, students and visitors.

A Thompson Citizen article titled “The TRCC is buying a folding wall and UCN isn’t paying for it” was recently written. It is accurate that TRCC will be installing and paying for a folding wall for safety and flexibility during events.

TRCC and UCN have a great working relationship. We collaborate on many projects, some of which TRCC pays for, others which UCN absorbs the costs. This is done for the benefit and safety of the community as a whole. It also simplifies the process and ensures projects are completed in a timely manner.

An example of this partnership is how we are responding to safety in this relatively new, shared space. While TRCC is planning to install a folding wall, UCN is looking at plans to install a “smart” emergency warning system. It would alert both buildings when RDPC’s lockdown procedure is activated. All plans are collaborative and have both buildings’ tenant and visitor safety in mind.

We look forward to the future positive collaboration between TRCC and UCN.

Mayor Colleen Smook, Thompson

UCN president and vice-chancellor Doug Lauvstad
