To the Editor:

I recently had to be admitted into the Thompson General Hospital and I have to write about my experience and the way I was being treated there as it seems we only hear about the negative things that the Northern Regional Health Authority (NRHA) and Thompson General Hospital do. I must say that after four days admitted, I was only treated with the utmost care and concern right from start at the emergency admittance staff/nurses to the staff/nurses upstairs. They were all so professional at what they do, and believe me, what they do is not an easy job at all. I was happy, but sad to hear about how the NRHA have to fly people in and out of town in some cases to get that professionalism, but being a owner of two small business in Thompson, I also know they have to do what they have to do these days to get those people. They still had a very good local content of staff that were as professional as everyone else. There was one nurse that said he was serving his last 30 days and was going back out east and didn’t have a job to go to but after 15 years had enough of nursing. It was unfortunate to hear that as he was one of the many, many people – as all of them were – that were so very kind and so very helpful not only to me, I noticed, but to everyone that came across their path. One particular night, they had eight people, on my floor only, that fell out of bed and he never missed a beat on the positive attitude at 6 a.m. that morning. It seemed to me that that attitude carried throughout the hospital. It seemed that his possible leaving the profession might have been partially due this profession being a thankless job, as there were a lot of patients that seemed to have an entitlement to treat these professionals with a less-than-kind attitude. Next time you have to be admitted or are waiting at emergency at the Thompson General Hospital, remember these are professionals and they are truly doing their best to get you looked after in the fastest time that is possible with the dollars that are available to them. A big hats off to the NRHA for training these professionals. Great job to everyone there and involved with the Thompson General Hospital and NRHA.
