Has there ever been a wild horse found in Northern Manitoba? Do horses really belong up here?

To the Editor:

I wish to further clarify my opinion regarding my letter about the local horses published on Aug. 12.

A former member of the Thompson Horse Owners Association that I have offended with my public letter has brought several issues to my attention. My intention was not to over-generalize and for that I apologize.

I realize there are horses at the stables that are treated as well as possible under the extreme conditions and are exercised daily. I did notice that some pens are rotated to allow grass to grow and sawdust is laid to soak up the mud.

However, there are some horses that have nowhere dry to stand and they do not look happy. I'm aware that horses can develop an infection in their hooves from being immersed in mud constantly like that. As for the bugs, I've been told that bug spray is used but I saw some horses that looked as though they were being eaten alive, with bloody welts all over. It is these horses I am most concerned about.

I feel it is important for someone to speak out about this and my question remains; do horses really belong here in the North? Has there ever been a wild horse found in Northern Manitoba? I would be surprised if that were the case.
