The Thompson Citizen and Nickel Belt News are back on Facebook after a five-year absence.

We are returning to Facebook this month in an effort to better keep our readers in the loop about important news items and events in Thompson and the surrounding region.

In 2013, then editor John Barker justified the decision to abandon our Facebook account by saying that this publication was not going to stand idly by while this platform was being used to spew racist comments and hateful language towards Indigenous people.

Since then, the Thompson Citizen and Nickel Belt News have maintained a steady online presence via Twitter, Instagram and our website at www.thompsoncitizen.net.

But the vast majority of our readers in Thompson, Northern Manitoba and beyond still use Facebook as their primary method of acquiring news and information online and having a presence here will help us fulfill our mission of keeping these people informed.

Open debate in a public forum is the absolute heart and soul of any strong democratic society and we actively encourage everybody to share our content and comment on our stories in a respectful manner.

The ugliness that caused us to abandon this platform five years ago hasn’t disappeared from online discourse or the world around us.

But we believe that using Facebook can increase public awareness of the important issues that we cover and provide a place for constructive criticism and debate.

Thanks for reading. We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming.
