Investments in northern recreation and job training
new email for bindle

While our Manitoba government continues to make record investments in education, health care and family services, we have again surpassed a deficit reduction target on a pace to balance the provincial budget in our second term. Public accounts for the past fiscal year show we have decreased the provincial summary deficit to $695 million, which is $145 million lower than the budgeted deficit of $840 million.

We have increased spending in health care by $386 million, in education by $399 million and in the Department of Families by $288 million over what the previous NDP government budgeted for these services in 2015.

This is real progress toward sustainability, and in protecting the services Manitoba families rely on. One such service is the Northern Patient Transportation Program. Despite misinformation spread recently through the media by the opposition, this is exactly the same program that has been in place in Manitoba for many years – including under the previous government – and remains unchanged.

Separately, I am pleased to announce that our Manitoba government has approved $9,200 in funding for the City of Thompson in support of multidisciplinary arts programming and activities co-ordinated through the Department of Recreation, Parks and Culture. Another $20,744 in funding has been approved through the Community Places Program for Thompson Ski Club Inc. to replace ski lift cables, and $4,088 has been approved under the Community Support Small Grant Program for Burntwood Curling Club.

I’m also pleased to confirm that our government is investing $62,400 for Class 1 driver training to be delivered by the Northern Manitoba Sector Council in Thompson, through our Employment Partnership funding program. This project will recruit eight trainees, with preference given to affected Vale workers and northern residents, and will provide training as well as driving experience required to pass a Class 1 driver’s licensing test.
