MLA Report - Nov. 23, 2018

New businesses and longtime volunteer organizations inspiring
Kelly Bindle head

I’m grateful to Donna Wilson of Quality Inn & Suites and Brenda Davidson and Natalie Lagace of the Society for Manitobans with Disabilities for organizing a Take Your MLA to Work Day event last week, and for introducing me to Danielle Hrabliuk. Danielle made time in her busy work schedule to show me around her workplace at Quality Inn & Suites in Thompson, demonstrating the tasks she performs and explaining her various responsibilities as a full-time employee. Danielle likes her job, and her supervisor and coworkers appreciate her commitment. She’s a wonderful example of those who contribute to organizations through the Manitoba Supported Employment Network. When people are given the opportunity to reach their potential, everyone benefits. I want to congratulate Danielle on her accomplishments and thank her for sharing her story.

It was also my pleasure last week to attend the grand opening of Thompson Bus & Freight with owners Sid Varma and Jimmy Pelk, along with several of their employees and drivers at their new location at Southwood Mall. It was a great opportunity to check out their buses and coaches, and to hear their plans for servicing the north. Varma and Pelk, along with their employees, are optimistic and confident as they make the tremendous effort to start, operate and grow their business in Thompson to benefit our region.

It’s inspiring to see not only new businesses, but longtime organizations providing excellent services in our area of the province. Operation Red Nose recently launched its 20th year in Thompson, and it was good to see original volunteer Bobbi Montean and all the other volunteers supporting newcomers like Nelly Duarte at the kick-off announcement. They are dedicating their time during this holiday season to ensure everyone gets home safely. Operation Red Nose can be reached at 204-778-8111 to give you and your vehicle a ride home.

I also saw Montean volunteering at the Santa Claus Parade last weekend in Thompson. Despite the cold weather, the kids enjoyed themselves while waiting to see Santa and Mrs. Claus at the end of the procession. Thanks go to the volunteers as well as to the sponsors, organizers, participants and everyone who attended for making the day special.
