Optimism for investing, developing and diversifying our northern economy
new email for bindle

The legacy of Canadian soldiers paid for in Canadian blood is our freedom and we will never forget this legacy as we keep the memories of their sacrifices in our thoughts. This past week marked the 100-year anniversary of Canada’s Hundred Days and the signing of the armistice to end the First World War in 1918. Thanks goes to members and volunteers from the Royal Canadian Legion Burntwood River Branch 244 for organizing the Remembrance Day ceremonies this year, including organizing the reception afterward at their hall, to commemorate the occasion.

Hon. Blaine Pedersen, Minister of Growth, Enterprise and Trade, was in Thompson this week to attend a two-day economic development tour hosted by the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce and sponsored by the Business Development Bank of Canada. Members from industry, business, commercial, and banking sectors travelled along with government officials, including the Consular the United States, from Winnipeg to Thompson to network with local community and business leaders in order to understand the untapped wealth and potential that exists here in Northern Manitoba. The trip included tours of Vale, Glacier/MDS Aero’s test site, University College of the North, Workforce Development Centre, Boreal Discovery Centre and the Thompson Regional Airport Authority, and a networking reception and luncheon provided by the Thompson Chamber of Commerce. There is plenty of optimism for investing, developing, and diversifying our northern economy, and we appreciate having our guests take the time to come to check out Thompson, share their thoughts and advice, as our government continues our efforts to achieve the North’s potential.

Congratulations to Chief Marcel Moody and Nisichawayasihk Creen Nation members on the cutting of the ribbon ceremony marking the grand opening of a woman’s shelter in their community Nov. 6.

Also congratulations on the grand reopening of Thompson Children’s World daycare at their new facility in the Westwood Mall in Thompson this week, and to Kristopher Blake for recently reopening the People First of Canada Chapter here in Thompson.
