Congratulations to Northern Manitoba Tourism Award winner Volker Beckmann
new email for bindle

On April 28, United Steelworkers Local 6166 hosted a National Day of Mourning ceremony at the Steelworkers Hall of Remembrance in Thompson, to honour and remember workers lost on the job and those who continue to fight to protect workers. I want to thank the Steelworkers for hosting this event every year, and thank Local 6166 president Warren Luky for inviting me to attend on behalf of the province. I’m also grateful to vice-president Tony Colbourne for overseeing the event, and to all the attendees for showing support for workers. We honour those lost by renewing our dedication to protecting others.

Congratulations to Thompson’s Volker Beckmann on receiving the Ambassador Award of Distinction at the Travel Manitoba Northern Tourism Awards last week at Opaskwayak Cree Nation. Beckmann received the award for his many contributions to the promotion of Northern Manitoba as a travel destination. Dedicated northerners such as Beckmann, and others who have worked with him through Spirit Way, Wolf Capital and other promotional campaigns over the years, deserve our gratitude for showcasing our beautiful region to the world.

Finally, it was my pleasure to be on hand with Cory Phillips and community members in Nelson House this week as Phillips Law donated a video game console to RCMP Const. Ryan Linklater, so he could put it into a raffle for students. Const. Linklater plans to encourage students to attend classes by putting the names of those with perfect attendance into a draw, with the winner receiving the game console. This is one of many donations that Phillips Law has made to northern communities over the years, and Nelson House band member Conrad Moore says the community certainly appreciates it.
