Province has promising future in mineral exploration and development
new email for bindle

Despite dealing with flood damage in their store, new Canadian Tire owners Mike and Jackie Howell hosted a successful Jumpstart fundraiser at Thompson Lions Park last weekend. There was a great turnout and it was my pleasure to take part in the barbecue and ticket draws, and to serve mock jail time for cash donations. Thanks goes out to Nick DiVirgilio and the Lions Club, the Howells, the Canadian Tire staff, local RCMP and their families and friends for volunteering, and to all those who attended to support such a worthy cause of kids’ participation in sports.

Whether municipal, provincial or federal, governments are stewards of the finances of the people they serve. Every penny spent by government comes from taxpayers. Along with the general public, businesses pay a large portion of these taxes and when authorizing spending, government must respect the contributions of all taxpayers by targeting clear objectives, being accountable and transparent, measuring results and ensuring value for money.

As in other sectors of Manitoba’s economy, this sound financial stewardship applies to the mining industry.

The previous NDP government’s adversarial attitude toward the mining sector in Northern Manitoba is among the factors that caused a downturn in mineral exploration and development in our region. However, the industry’s prospects are currently looking up as our province’s economy improves and its fiscal situation stabilizes. Manitoba is now open for business. And mining firms are co-operating with communities here for the sake of jobs and training for new careers in the sector, as well as for the services supporting the industry.

Our province has a promising future in mineral exploration and development, and the industry has potential to bring economic gains to Northern Manitoba.
