To the Editor:

I would like to comment on the letter to the editor of June 10, titled "I can see clearly now."

I agree with the statement, "I encourage all members of the TMHA to reassess their reasons for involvement with hockey in this community." I have served on numerous boards and committees. I made lasting relationships and had fun as a volunteer. I always felt that the members served a purpose; there was always that team atmosphere which encouraged everyone to work together. Hopefully, the new board members of the TMHA will have the same experiences.

I believe that the statement "cleaning up the disgusting mess (poor decision making, inclusivity, lack or transparency, etc.) the last board has left" may create a false impression. It is important to remember that board members have to balance the interests of many divergent stakeholders, including coaches, referees, Hockey Manitoba and 350 players and their parents to create a program that works for everyone.

It is important to recognize the considerable accomplishments of the previous board. Thanks to their efforts, the TMHA has successfully implemented new changes to its programming mandated by Hockey Canada, introduced a new registration program, developed a website, changed the house league format to encourage participation, increased ice time availability for both select and non-select kids, created house league sponsors, updated jerseys and will be opening a TMHA office at the arena so that the organization can be more accessible to its users.

The TMHA's financial affairs have improved substantially, and the organization no longer operates in the red. Most importantly, participation levels have increased and the kids are having fun. I truly feel that the board continued to raise the bar and was looking at the "big picture and beyond" to what was right for the association and Thompson.

I want to acknowledge the coaches, managers and board members who went above and beyond the call of duty to maintain the 2008/09 season with the use of only one rink. My understanding is that this past season has been one of the most successful as Thompson teams won medals in numerous tournaments and provincials. It was your dedication that has developed a leading hockey program in Thompson and for setting a very high standard for others to follow.

The TMHA board is now bigger than ever with all positions filled. It will be more important for everyone to work together to build on the organization's successes. As all hockey fans know, it's easy to criticize from the stands, but your perspective can change quickly once you hit the ice. But, for the sake of the kids and our community's strong ethic of volunteerism, it's important that we all continue to support our hockey organization with respect and dedication.

My last note to the citizens of Thompson; please don't critique or criticize volunteers in public. This community is who we are because of our strong volunteer base.
