Access to medicines is a human right

To the Editor: A very large number of persons die every day around the world because they don't have access to affordable medicines. The reason for that: the big drug companies monopoly over medicines they got patented.

Canada did pass a law in 2004 to allow less expensive generic medicine versions being exported to developing countries poor populations, but has other interests were also involved, this law failed to reach its goal. Only one country has been able to use it - Rwanda - and in a very restrictive way.

Our federal MPs, whatever their affiliation is, must therefore make sure to amend the Patent Act and the Food and Drugs Act to allow generic affordable medicines being exported to all the poor populations around the world who desperately need them.

Vaccines, antibiotics and drugs for conditions such as HIV/AIDS and infectious diseases have kept countless millions alive and reduced untold suffering. We can't just stay there, not doing anything.
