The Canadian Red Cross flew 14,000 litres of bottled water from Thompson to Shamattawa First Nation in northeastern Manitoba May 3 to help the community deal with a water treatment plant failure.
The supply is enough for residents to drink and cook for three days.
The assistance is being provided through an agreement with the federal government for the Red Cross to provide disaster assistance to Manitoba First Nations. Expenses for this effort are being covered by the federal government but anyone who wishes to donate money to support the Red Cross’s other relief efforts can visit redcross.ca or call 1-800-418-1111. The Red Cross does not accept donations of goods because it does not have the capacity and resources to store and handle them.
