Wabowden RCMP responded to a call about a hiker in heat-related distress in Pisew Falls Provincial Park July 3, the area’s hottest day of 2021 so far.

Wabowden RCMP travelled by boat to rescue two hikers from the shores of the Grass River July 3.

Police were notified around 6:40 p.m. Saturday that a 50-year-old female hiker from Winnipeg was experiencing heat-related medical distress on the Kwasitchewan Falls trail about six kilometres from the trail exit in Pisew Falls Provincial Park. The temperature at the time was 37 degrees Celsius, RCMP say.

The hiker and her companion were instructed to makes their way down to the water to cool off and to stay there until police arrived. They were taken by boat to waiting emergency medical services personnel who determined that neither of the two had serious injuries or conditions.

“We are so glad that people are out and enjoying the beautiful outdoor trails in the area,” said Wabowden RCMP detachment commander Cpl.Lisa Wowchuk. “With high temperatures, we want to remind anyone heading out on these long and somewhat difficult hikes to make sure they have enough water and are dressed appropriately. Give yourself lots of time so you can take breaks and find some shade.”
