A pair of Moose Lake residents were convicted of illegally hunting moose in a conservation closure area after one of them shot at a moose decoy near the Manitoba-Saskatchewan boundary in October of last year.

Conservation officers set up the decoy on Provincial Trunk Highway 77 near National Mills. As they were watching, a truck drove by, then stopped and turned around to get closer to the decoy. The officers saw a rifle barrel come out of the rear passenger window. A shot was fired and the vehicle drove off before being pulled over.

Morgan Lambert pleaded guilty in January to hunting moose in a conservation closure and discharging a firearm from a vehicle. He was ordered to pay $2,642 in fines and a rifle was forfeited to the Crown. Lawrence Knight was found guilty in April of hunting moose in a conservation closure and hunting from a provincial highway and was ordered to pay $1,856 in fines.

Anyone with information about illegal activities can call their local Sustainable Development office or the Turn in Poachers (TIP) line at 1-800-782-0076.
