Thompson Progressive Conservative MLA Kelly Bindle has been appointed as a member of the Manitoba Hydro-Electric Board (MHEB), the party said in a news release Nov. 9.

Bindle was elected as a rookie MLA when the PCs formed the government in 2016, defeating long-time NDP incumbent Steve Ashton. Bindle has previously served as the legislative assistant to the growth, enterprise and trade minister from 2016 to 2018 and on the venture capital committee, the fiscal review committee of cabinet, the Look North Strategy committee and the Hudson Bay Regional Roundtable. He is currently a member of the Manitoba Public Accounts and Midwest-Canada Relations committees.

A civil/structural engineer, Bindle worked in the mining and central engineering departments at Inco in Thompson and then managed mining projects for the company in Sulawesi, Indonesia, including the planning and procurement of crushing equipment for a dam construction project. He came back to Canada in 2007 and started an engineering consulting firm in Thompson.

Bindle’s experience as an engineer and small business owner, as well as his perspective as a resident of Northern Manitoba, will be valuable assets to the Manitoba Hydro-Electric Board as it carries out its mandate to ensure a safe, reliable, economical and environmentally sustainable energy supply for Manitoba, while keeping rates low for Manitobans,” said the press release.

The MHEB oversees the business and affairs of Crown corporation Manitoba Hydro.
