A delegation of business ambassadors living or investing in Thompson were in Winnipeg in late June to outline current and future growth opportunities in the city and region to 80 of the Manitoba capital’s legal, financial and development leaders.

The event was organized by Thompson 2020, whose co-project manager Harold Smith said $164 million of public and private investment was due to take place in Thompson this year, with more than $120 million of that from private investors. Current Vale Manitoba Operations vice-president Mark Scott told the audience the mining company had invested more than $80 million to support a long future as a mining and milling operation now that smelting and refining operations are in their final days.

“Thompson offers a broad market reach to a young, growing population, a long-term development plan for growth and diversification, great regional Indigenous partners and confident local investors,” said Smith in a press release, noting that the city serves as a healthcare, education, justice, shopping and industrial services hub to a region with more than 50,000 residents, most of whom identified as Indigenous in the 2016 census. “These are the opportunities in the Hub of the North.”

Thompson 2020 is an initiative sponsored by the City of Thompson, Vale and the federal and provincial governments to develop employment and career opportunities for residents and facilitate interaction between Thompson’s business community and potential investors. It will continue through 2019, after which the City of Thompson and local partners will take over its work.
