Second mayoral hopeful, second incumbent councillor registered as municipal election candidates

With less than 24 hours to go before the nomination period ends, Thompson has a race for the mayor’s position for the time being, with Ryan Brady having put his name forward to run against current councillor Penny Byer, who announced her intention to run back in May.

Three new school trustee candidates have also joined the race – Jill Quilty, Peter Aarinola and Samantha Scibak. That brings the total number of candidates to fill the new school board to seven – the same as the number of available seats. Susan Oxford, Saima Aziz, Lindsay Anderson and Samantha Chartrand had previously registered. If no more candidates register, there would be no need for a school board election, but incumbent trustee Don Macdonald previously told the Thompson Citizen that he intends to run for re-election, while a couple of other current trustees said they were undecided or hadn’t responded to inquiries.

There are now more than two council candidates for each of the available seats, with incumbent Judy Kolada and rookie challengers Serena Puranen, Brian Lundmark, Chiew Chong and Martin Grier having registered between Sept. 14 and 4 p.m. Sept. 17. There are now 17 council candidates including previous registrants Malanie Cutler, Earl Colbourne, Les Ellsworth, Bryan Young, Paul Henri Beck, Jeff Fountain, Tim Gibson, Adey Adeyemi, Rita Werstroh, Andre Proulx, Godfrey Buhagiar and incumbent councillor Blake Ellis.

Registered candidates have until 4 p.m. Sept. 19 to withdraw from their races provided there are enough candidates to fill the available seats. Following that deadline, a draw will be held to determine the order of names on the ballots for the Oct. 24 election.
