Rollercoaster of weather extremes for Thompson

Thompson came close to a record temperature Sept. 17 and then followed it up with a wicked thunderstorm that covered much of Northern Manitoba the next morning.

Thompson came close to a record temperature Sept. 17 and then followed it up with a wicked thunderstorm that covered much of Northern Manitoba the next morning.

Environment Canada says the temperature in Thompson reached 27 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, less than a degree behind the record for that date, which was 27.8 degrees in 1976. The average high for Sept. 17 is 12.2 degrees and the average low 1.1 degrees. The low on Tuesday was 13.4 degrees.

A thunderstorm hit Thompson shortly after 9 a.m. Sept. 18, with skies making it look more like evening than morning, as well as wind and lightning.

Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Thompson, Nelson House, Split Lake, York Landing, Thicket Portage, Pikwitonei, South Indian Lake and  Amisk Provincial Park at 9:36 a.m. Sept. 18, warning that hail the size of loonies and wind gusts exceeding 90 kilometres per hour were possible. The severe thunderstorm watch ended at 10:09 a.m.
