The use of e-cigarettes and other vaping devices was banned at R.D. Parker Collegiate Dec. 12.

R.D. Parker Collegiate informed students and their parents Dec. 12 that vaping has been banned on school property.

Vaping is the act of inhaling nicotine-containing aerosol, or vapour, from e-cigarettes or similar devices like vape pens and advanced personal vapourizers. Drugs such as THC, the chemical responsible for most of marijuana’s mind-altering effects, can also be vaped, says the Centre for Addiction.

“Effective immediately, vaping is not allowed at R.D. Parker Collegiate,” said a message sent out to students’ parents Dec. 12. “Leave your vaping devices at home. If you are vaping at our school, your parents will be called, and you will be sent home for the day, and your device will be confiscated. RCMP will be involved at the discretion of school admin.”

The message also said that, because school staff are not always able to determine what substances students who vape have been ingesting, parents should discuss with any student sent home for violating this ban exactly what they were vaping so they can take appropriate action.

Asked by the Thompson Citizen why the school was banning vaping now, partway through the school year, RDPC principal Rob Fisher said, “We feel this is the right decision for our school at this time.”
