Thompson residents and businesses donated $2,395 to Lions Manor 55 during an April 11 radio-thon, bringing the total of cash and in-kind donations thus far for the seniors’ housing complex to $716,000.
“We are very grateful for those who phoned in during the radio-thon and to CHTM for hosting this event,” said Nick DiVirgilio, Lions Manor 55 board president, in a press release. “The real success of the radio-thon was the awareness the program created in the community. We have had several people contact us saying they want more information on how to become residents. That’s important because we want all 30 units filled.”
DiVirgilio said finances for the construction are in place but that continuing to fundraise during and after construction will reduce the amount of money that must be borrowed.
“We’ve been fortunate to have had the land donated,” DiVirgilio said. “The Lions Club donated the bulk of the property. And the city donated an additional piece. That was a major factor in determining if we could go ahead with this project.”
The 30-unit Lions Manor 55, officially registered as Lions Manor Seniors Non-Profit Housing Cooperative Inc., will have suites with balconies, wider entrance areas and appliances, as well as a common-area multipurpose room, with kitchen service, a guest suite, storage space and a gift shop.
Project manager Curtis Ross says construction by A&B Builders is progressing well despite challenging weather conditions over the past several months.
“The roof is up and shingles are being installed,” said Ross. “Mechanical and electrical work in the basement is installed and crews are ready to proceed with plumbing and interior installations. We expect to have at least two display suites ready to view by the public by fall. This has been a cold winter with lots of snow. That makes for pretty difficult working conditions. But A & B, true to the spirit of Thompson, has been progressing very well despite the weather.”
