Thompson RCMP officers were involved in a collision April 18 when a suspected impaired driver pulled out of a parking lot in front of their police vehicle.

The vehicle was travelling down Selkirk Avenue while responding to a call around 6 a.m. April 18. A vehicle exiting a parking lot failed to yield to oncoming traffic and drove out in front of it. The officer driving took evasive action and went onto the curb and snowbank, striking a lamppost. The other vehicle hit the rear of the RCMP vehicle but the damage was minimal.

The officers in the vehicle were not injured in the collision and got out to approach the other vehicle, which was stopped in the middle of the road. The driver showed signs of impairment and was arrested, then taken to hospital as a medical precaution, where they were treated and released.

The 33-year-old Thompson resident is charged with impaired driving and refusing to take a breath or drug test and is scheduled to appear in court June. 29.

RCMP continue investigating.
