Manitoba passed 1,000 total cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic began over five months ago with the Aug. 25 announcement of 25 new positive tests and the province’s 13th novel coronavirus-related death.

Ten of the new cases announced Tuesday were in the Prairie Mountain health region, nine were in the southern health region and six were in Winnipeg.

The latest COVID-19 related death was a woman in her 90s from the Steinbach health district. The province said hers was a previously known case connected to a known outbreak at Bethesda Place personal care home.

Seven people were in hospital due to COVID-19 as of 9:30 a.m. Aug. 25, including one in intensive care. There are 399 active cases of COVID-19 in Manitoba and 606 people have recovered from the virus. The total number of lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the province since the first positive test was announced in mid-March is 1,018 and 1,428 tests were completed on Monday, bringing the total since early February to 128,576.

The province recommends that only people who are showing symptoms of COVID-19 such as a cough, runny nose or fever should be tested for the virus. Once those symptoms develop, testing should be sought as soon as possible.

Frequent hand washing, staying home when feeling ill, covering coughs, physically distancing yourself from people outside your household and wearing a mask when physical distancing isn’t possible are recommended by Manitoba Public Health to lower your risk of contracting COVID-19 or transmitting the virus to others.
