Importance of maintaining Indigenous language highlighted at Wapanohk

On May 23 Wapanohk Community School celebrated its unique linguistic designation within the School District of Mystery Lake (SDML) by putting on its annual Cree Language Festival.

On May 23 Wapanohk Community School celebrated its unique linguistic designation within the School District of Mystery Lake (SDML) by putting on its annual Cree Language Festival.

This event was hosted by SDML language consultant Ron Cook and featured various pieces of artwork and music from the school’s students, including a rendition of “O Canada” sung entirely in Cree.

Afternoon classes also got the chance to take part in 24 different workshops and activities ranging from Cree bingo to a demonstration by a local trapper.
