An impaired driver who drove onto a Thompson sidewalk and struck two children, sending one of them to hospital with injuries, is facing multiple charges, RCMP say.

Police were called to Station Road around 6 p.m. Aug. 28 for a report of the children, aged two and four, being hit by a vehicle. Witnesses said the vehicle drove onto the sidewalk and hit the two girls, who were walking with their father, and that the driver then attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended by bystanders.

The two-year-old was treated and released at the scene by Thompson Fire & Emergency Services paramedics, who transported the four-year-old to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The 36-year-old male driver was arrested for impaired driving and taken to the Thompson RCMP detachment where he provided breath samples that were three times the legal limit for blood alcohol content while operating a vehicle, police say.

Jaden Kenneth Pittman was remanded into custody on two counts of dangerous driving, one count of impaired driving, one count of failing to stop after an accident and several counts of failing to comply with release order conditions.
