Grads gang up on grime to raise money for last high school party

Graduating high school students organized a car wash at R.D. Parker Collegiate June 5 to generate some funds for their year-end celebration known as safe grad.

Graduating high school students organized a car wash at R.D. Parker Collegiate June 5 to generate some funds for their year-end celebration known as safe grad.

With a little help from members of the Thompson Professional Firefighters Association, the group managed to raise $770, which will go towards paying for the party’s venue, decorations, food and alcohol.

According to safe grad committee co-chair Paula Duarte-Sheppard, the group also raised an additional $2,100 through a bottle drive that took place the same day.

While the safe grad committee has already surpassed their fundraising goal, Duarte-Sheppard said they are running this bottle drive until the end of the month and will use the remaining cash for next year’s festivities.

Right now, the safe grad committee is also on the lookout for more volunteers who can serve as cooks, chaperones, bartenders and designated drivers for the after-graduating party, which is taking place June 26 at the Royal Canadian Legion from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Anyone who still wants to volunteer, or donate their empties, can contact either Duarte-Sheppard at 204-679-5501 or fellow committee co-chair Laurie Vallance at 204-679-5039.
