Fires six hours apart damage homes along Cree Road

Thompson Fire & Emergency Services (TFES) and Thompson RCMP responded to two residential building fires less than six hours apart Dec. 23-24.

The first fire, in a mobile home on Cree Road, was reported around 6:35 p.m. Multiple fire trucks were dispatched and firefighters contained the fire to the building where it began, which Thompson RCMP said was a total loss. Both tenants escaped the residence without injury. The cause of the fire is believed to be an electric heat source in the trailer’s porch.

Just after midnight Dec. 24, TFES and RCMP responded to a fire on Fox Bay, just off Cree Road. The building was being evacuated when police arrived and one person, who was reported to have jumped from a second story window of the apartment complex, was located by police. A second floor window on the Cree Road side of the building was smashed out and it appears someone jumped from there onto a small porch roof over a door and then down to the ground. The Thompson Professional Firefighters Association said on their Facebook page Dec. 24 that multiple frozen hydrants made it difficult to establish a water supply but firefighters got the fire under control and prevented a potentially catastrophic loss. No injuries resulted from the fire, which is believed to have originated in a kitchen.
