The driver of a vehicle that hit an R.D. Parker Collegiate student in front of the school on Thompson Drive in the second week of March has been charged under the Highway Traffic Act, Thompson RCMP say.

The driver faces a charge of failing to yield to a pedestrian.

According to RDPC principalBonnie Rempel’s March 14 weekly update email to parents and guardians, the student who was struck did not suffer any major injuries.

Rempel also urged parents to remind their children about the potential consequences of failing to pay attention when crossing Thompson Drive.

“Even when pedestrians are following protocols when crossing at the crosswalk, accidents happen,” she wrote. “Please remind them to push the button and always try to look towards the traffic to ensure that vehicles are slowing down, as many of our students walk through the crosswalk without looking.  They may be crossing legally, and an accident may be 100 per cent the fault of the driver, but at the end of the day, the pedestrian will always be the one paying the price.  Let’s work together to prevent this from happening here at RDPC.”
