A driver found sleeping in an idling SUV nearly hit a police officer when he awoke and backed up the vehicle March 27.

Thompson RCMP responding to a report of someone sleeping in a vehicle near a townhouse on Princeton Drive found a 35-year-old Thompson man asleep behind the wheel of the running vehicle with an open container of liquor next to him.

As a police officer tried to rouse the driver, he awoke and backed up, nearly hitting the RCMP member.

The driver was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle but refused to provide breath samples. He faces multiple charges and will be released to appear in court at a later date.
