Recycled paper collected by the Thompson Recycling Centre from the Northern Regional Health Authority (NRHA) in Thompson may have included confidential information.

The recycling centre advised the NRHA of the potential breach of confidential information on Oct. 20.

The NRHA has advised the Manitoba Ombudsman of the potential breach and an investigation has begun. The NRHA says it has taken steps to contain any further documents already at the recycling centre and recycling has been suspended at the NRHA site where the breach is believed to have occurred. Any recommendations from the investigation will be implemented without delay, the NRHA says.

“The NRHA takes the protection of data and information very seriously and regrets that this incident has occurred,” said an Oct. 21 NRHA press release. “Steps are underway to ensure all policies and processes regarding privacy are rigorously adhered to. The NRHA has robust policies in place to address the collecting, handling, storing and appropriate destruction of confidential information.”
