The Eastwood Park wading pool has been demolished but construction of the splash pad planned to replace it won’t begin until the spring of 2020.

“The design is being finalized in consultation with Public Health, and the parts list has been prepared for ordering,” says City of Thompson communications officer Kacper Antoszewski. “We expect construction to begin next year as soon as the ground is suitable for work to begin for the season."

Demolition of the Eastwood wading pool began July 9.

A July 10 news release said a review of the pool found that the foundation was severely cracked and aged and required significant upgrades to meet current standards. The decision to convert it to a splash pad also took into consideration that splash pads use less water than wading pools, which must be drained and refilled daily.

The city said that the Eastwood ball diamond would not be affected by work on the wading pool area.

The indoor Norplex Pool was shut down permanently Feb. 13 due to critical infrastructure and safety issues. The Juniper Park wading pool remains open and is the site of swimming lessons for children aged three to six until Aug. 9.
