Community Christmas dinner will be a success thanks to generous nature of Thompson, organizers say

The family members who took over organizing Thompson’s annual community Christmas dinner last year say they are preparing to make this year’s edition even bigger and better. “It’s in full swing,” says Sharon Cordell, who is organizing the Dec.

The family members who took over organizing Thompson’s annual community Christmas dinner last year say they are preparing to make this year’s edition even bigger and better.

“It’s in full swing,” says Sharon Cordell, who is organizing the Dec. 25 even with her daughter Tori Cordell and her mother Mayor Colleen Smook. “We have our donations rolling in. It’s been busy.”

Running on Christmas Day from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Hall on Cree Road, the community Christmas dinner is free for anyone to attend and everyone who shows up will get a free gift bag with socks and some other goodies as a gift – “so they don’t feel like they’re there just to eat and leave.” Sharon says.

This year’s theme is a Charlie Brown Christmas, complete with a spindly Christmas tree and will feature live entertainment from a local musician who asked to help out.

The trio will get together in the coming week to figure out what, if any food, they need to pull off this dinner for 300 people.

“We each have our own lists,” said Tori, but they need to make sure there are enough spuds. “Potatoes are the most important part.”

Many previous volunteers as well as some new ones have already stepped up, but more help is always welcome, whether it’s to peel potatoes, wash dishes, serve food, decorate the hall or clean up when the event is over.

“We’re a very giving community and it’s very evident for this event,” said Sharon. “I can’t believe the community reception. Thompson has a big heart and it shows. This is where some people want to give at this time of year.”

For those who can’t make it out to the event, the organizers are compiling a list and will deliver meals to those people on Christmas Day.

“In the end, it’s a couple hundred people with full bellies who have had a visit,” said Sharon. “I know there was a lot of mingling among people last year. It was nice to see the little clusters of people at the tables.”
