City finalizes schedule for 2019 Winterfest

Music, hockey and family entertainment is at the forefront of this year’s festivities

With Winterfest less than two weeks away, the city’s recreation department is able to confirm most of the high-profile events that will be taking place in and around the Thompson Regional Community Centre Feb. 22−24.

According to recreation director Carol Taylor, this year’s Winterfest will kick-off with an opening ceremony on Friday night, which will include fireworks, a bonfire and a live indoor performance by local rock band Between the Ditches.

Saturday’s itinerary will feature most of Winterfest’s big-ticket attractions, like a hotdog lunch, family skate, mini-putt, comedy juggling from performer Chris Without the Hat and a production of Munschtopia at the Letkemann Theatre.

Hockey enthusiasts will also find plenty to do on Saturday. Not only is a four-on-four road hockey tournament taking place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., but the midget AAA Norman Northstars are inviting fans to watch their Feb. 23 match-up against the Interlake Lightning for free.

In fact, Taylor said most of the events for Winterfest 2019 are free, with the exception being the Munschtopia show.

Winterfest will wrap up Sunday with a pancake breakfast, some more live music and the closing ceremonies.

“We’ve kind of made it more family-oriented, rather than individual things, this year,” said Taylor. “It’s been a long winter. Come out and meet your neighbours again.”

The city will post a full Winterfest 2019 schedule on their website and Facebook page sometime this upcoming week.

Otherwise, anyone interested in volunteering for, or finding more information about, Winterfest 2019 can do so by calling the city’s recreation department at 204-677-7952.
