The former resident of a Pipe Road trailer destroyed by fire Aug. 31 says the blaze was the result of negligence.

Jessica Noort, who is hearing impaired and spoke to the Thompson Citizen through an interpreter, said the fire got started when one of her intoxicated roommates prepared a meal in the kitchen around 3 or 4 a.m. and quickly forgot about it before passing out.

The trailer’s occupants at the time −Noort’s boyfriend, her roommate and her boyfriend’s niece −noticed that the home was on fire around 9 a.m., which is when Thompson Fire & Emergency Services (TFES) showed up to battle the blaze.

Since she was working out of town at the time, Noort didn’t arrive at the scene until 3 or 4 p.m., long after firefighters had put out the flames.

Though no people were injured, Noort said her puppy Missy, a mixed black lab, was killed in the fire.

Currently, Noort is working a 21-day shift at Manitoba Hydro’s Keeyask Generating Station and won’t be able to return to Thompson to try and salvage her belongings until Sept. 19.
