The School District of Mystery Lake (SDML) school board will have a lot of new blood following the Oct. 24 municipal elections, as one of its seven members has already resigned and at least two more will not seek re-election, with another trustee still on the fence.

Trustee Janet Brady resigned at the end of last school year, while Ryan Land will not seek a second term on the board after taking a Sudbury-based job with Vale. Liz Lychuk also told the Thompson Citizen that she would not be seeking a second term next month, while Leslie Tucker is undecided about whether she will run for a third term.

Don MacDonald, who is nearing the end of his first term on the board, is the only current trustee to have confirmed to the Citizen that he will be seeking re-election. Email inquiries to veteran trustee Guido Oliveira and to Sandra Fitzpatrick, who joined the board in October 2014, have not yet received responses.

So far, with just seven days including today before the nomination period ends, there are two school board candidates who have registered: Susan Oxford and Samantha Chartrand. There must be at least eight candidates as of 4 p.m. Sept. 18 in order to make an election necessary. If there are seven or fewer canddiates, they will be awarded seats by acclamation.
