18-year-old arrested for assaulting Thompson RCMP officer with bear spray

A Thompson RCMP officer investigating a report of suspicious people carrying machetes was sprayed with bear spray Aug. 12.

Two officers responded to the report of armed people on Juniper Drive around 1:15 p.m. Wednesday and located four people matching the descriptions provided. They approached and detained the group, and were questioning them about possessing weapons when one of the suspects pulled out bear spray and sprayed an officer in the face.

An 18-year-old male from Thompson was arrested by the officers while the other three suspects fled the scene. The man who was arrested remains in police custody and will face charges of assaulting a police officer, carrying a concealed weapon, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and possessing a prohibited weapon.

The officer who was sprayed attended Thompson General Hospital and was later released.

Thompson RCMP continue to investigate.
