16-minute council meeting provides no answers regarding date of public forum on Norplex Pool closure

Mayor, city manager and councillor taking $12,000 trip to Quebec at the end of May
Thompson city council meeting (Feb. 19, 2019)
Deputy Mayor Kathy Valentino (centre) filled in for Mayor Colleen Smook during Thompson city council’s Feb. 19 meeting, as the mayor was in Churchill.

Thompson city council’s Feb. 19 meeting barely lasted 16 minutes, since a scheduled presentation from Travel Manitoba was cancelled.

As a result, councillors breezed through a small number of resolutions with minimal debate.

One of these resolutions involved the municipal government entering into a new land lease agreement with AMP Industries, who are looking to develop on 7,245 square feet of city land.

Council also approved sending Mayor Colleen Smook, city manager Anthony McInnis and Coun. Les Ellsworth to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ annual conference and trade show in Quebec City, which is taking place May 30−June 2.*

A memo from executive assistant Angela English said this trip will cost $12,871, although McInnis’s travel expenses ($4,237) are incurred under his departmental budget.

As a follow-up to a Dec. 10 council meeting, the Thompson Planning District officially passed the city’s 2019 fees and fines schedule, which represents a 1.9 per cent increase from last year.

To wrap up Tuesday’s meeting, deputy mayor Kathy Valentino, who served as chairperson with the mayor out of town, said council still doesn’t know when the public forum on the permanent closure of the Norplex Pool will take place. However, she said the city will be informing the public of the event’s date and venue “in a timely manner.”

Council’s next meeting will take place March 4 at 7 p.m.

* A previous version of this story implied that council voted unanimously to send Mayor Colleen Smook, city manager Anthony McInnis and Coun. Les Ellsworth to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ annual conference and trade show. In fact, at least one council member voted against it. The Thompson Citizen apologizes for this error.
