A Wabowden youth was one of 13 from across Canada whose submissions were chosen as names for the first 13 puppies born this year at the RCMP’s police dog training and breeding centre in Alberta, it was announced April 28.

Peyak (Cree for one) was the name submitted by Kinsley Thomas, who will receive a photo of the puppy who is given that name, a plush dog named Justice and an RCMP water bottle, as will the other 12 winners.

Other winning names included Paisley, Pax, Pepper, Peyton, Phantom, Phazer, Phelan, Piper, Pixel, Polly Preston and Pria.

In cases where one of the winning names was submitted by more than one contestant, a draw was held to determine which one would be selected.

Over 20,000 online entries from Canadians aged four to 14 years old were received this year, the RCMP said.

“I was amazed by the level of participation from across Canada,” said Insp. Alana McLeod, officer in charge of RCMP Police Dog Services, in a press release. “This is my first year as head of the Police Dog Service Training Centre and I’m extremely proud that our contest reached so many children.”

Next year, the name-the-puppy contest will be looking for names that start with R.
