Thompson health district reaches 1,000 total COVID cases since pandemic began

The Thompson/Mystery Lake health district became the second district in the north to reach 1,000 total cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic began with the addition of two new cases June 16.

The cases were among 18 new infections in the north announced by the province Wednesday, nearly half of which – 8 – were in The Pas/Opaskwayak/Kelsey health district, which has the highest number of active cases in the north right now.

Provincewide, there were 144 new cases of COVID-19 announced June 16, though one previously reported case was removed from the total for a net increase of 143 cases. Eighty of the new cases were in Winnipeg, 29 in the southern health region, nine in the Prairie Mountain region and eight in the Interlake-Eastern health region.

The province also announced seven deaths linked to the virus on Wednesday, increasing Manitoba’s total to 1,111 since the pandemic began.There are 273 people in hospital in Manitoba due to CIVID-19, including 61 in intensive care. Another 22 Manitobans are in intensive care units in Ontario and Alberta. Thirteen northerners are in hospital due to the virus, including three in intensive care.

The five-day test positivity rate in Manitoba June 16 was 9.7 per cent.

Second-dose vaccine eligibility expanded June 16 to include anyone who received their first dose on or before May 14. As of 11:45 a.m. June 17, it will be open to anyone who received a first dose May 18 or earlier.

Manitoba has administered 1,077,421 doses of vaccine so far, and has received 1,178,960 doses. An additional 63,180 doses of Pfizer vaccine and 105,280 of Moderna are expected to arrive in the province this week.
