A third person has been arrested in relation to a series of threatening and hateful social media posts made last month.

News of the arrest was released to The Reminder on Aug. 9. The third person has not been identified.

Further information about the case has not been released publicly since July 31. In a news release, Manitoba RCMP announced two people, a 32-year-old from Flin Flon and a 25-year-old from Denare Beach, had been arrested and faced charges of uttering threats and public incitement of hatred.

However, the charges facing all three arrestees have not yet been sworn. The case file is currently undergoing a Crown opinion in Winnipeg. Charges filed in the case may be changed as the opinion continues. Other information, including where any court proceedings would take place or what level of involvement the Crown will have in the case, is not yet known.

Flin Flon RCMP Cpl. Ray Hamilton said charges relating to inflammatory and threatening social media posts are rare.

“In the 18 years I’ve been doing this, it’s the first time for me – I’ve never actually seen those charges laid.”

The posts that sparked the arrests were made after unknown assailants vandalized a vehicle and home in Flin Flon. In a series of posts on Facebook, first on personal pages and later on the now-defunct public Flin Flon Post It page, some individuals posted threats and racist slurs, including calling for a “shoot a (sic) Indian day” and called for a “24-hour purge, referencing the horror film The Purge.

No arrests have been made relating to the vandalism incident itself.
