Shamattawa resident drowns in Gods River

A 39-year-old man is dead after what appears to have been an accidental drowning in Shamattawa, police say. Shamattawa RCMP were called to a possible drowning behind the 100 block of Riverside Road around 2 p.m. July 10.

A 39-year-old man is dead after what appears to have been an accidental drowning in Shamattawa, police say.

Shamattawa RCMP were called to a possible drowning behind the 100 block of Riverside Road around 2 p.m. July 10. The man was on the riverbank, unresponsive, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers heard that the man had gone into Gods River to swim and encountered problems while swimming back to shore and got pulled under by the current. He resurfaced after an extended period of time and was brought to shore by bystanders.

RCMP continue to investigate.

Shamattawa is fly-in First Nation about 360 kilometres by air east of Thompson at the junction of Gods River and Echoing River.
