Manitoba’s police watchdog agency is investigating an incident in which a vehicle that police tried to pull over in Opaskwayak Cree Nation (OCN) hit a house, causing injuries to the driver.
Officers from the Manitoba First Nations Police Service, which took over policing OCN from the RCMP in April, saw a vehicle being driven at high speed July 18 and turned on their lights in an attempt to pull it over but lost sight of the vehicle because it was travelling too fast. They later located it at an intersection where it had run into a house.
The male youth in the vehicle had blood on his face and complained of a sore arm. Police called emergency medical services, who took him to hospital in The Pas where he was diagnosed with a broken arm. He was later transferred to Winnipeg for further treatment.
A broken arm is considered a serious injury by the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU), which investigates serious incidents involving on- and off-duty police officers in the province.
