An Alberta man ran over a spike belt, crashed into another vehicle and took off into the bush near Cranberry Portage July 31 after having stolen a vehicle with a three-year-old girl in the back seat in Creighton, Saskatchewan around 4:20 p.m.

The vehicle was stolen outside a business on Main Street and was reported as heading towards Flin Flon. Creighton and Flin Flon RCMP pursued the vehicle until just outside Cranberry Portage when it hit the spike belt and rear-ended another vehicle. The driver fled into the bush and police located the child, who was then reunited with her mother.

Creighton, Flin Flon, Cranberry Portage and The Pas RCMP set up a perimeter in an effort to contain the fleeing suspect, who was found by a police dog hiding under a vehicle in a nearby outbuilding. He was taken to hospital for treatment of a broken rib and a laceration sustained when the police dog apprehended him and then released into the custody of Saskatchewan RCMP.

Terrance Charles Nickerson, 42, of Medicine Hat, Alberta, is charged with kidnapping without a firearm, abduction of a person under 16 years old, theft of a vehicle, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, operating a motor vehicle while being pursued by police and resisting a peace officer.

Because the suspect suffered what is defined as a serious injury, the Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) of Manitoba, which investigates serious incidents involving on- or off-duty police officers, was notified by RCMP and is asking anyone with information or video footage that will assist with the investigation to contact the IIU toll-free at 1-844-667-6060.
