Northern Manitoba’s share of new daily COVID-19 infections is growing as the total number of new cases provincewide falls.

The north accounted for more than a quarter of Manitoba’s 70 new cases June 30. The 20 cases in the Northern Regional Health Authority area was the second-highest of any region, only behind Winnipeg, where there were 29 new cases.

There were 12 new cases in the southern health region, seven in the Interlake-Eastern region and two in the Prairie Mountain region.

The Shamattawa/York Factory/Tataskweyak/Split Lake health district had the most new cases in the north on Wednesday, with six. There were also four in the Grand Rapids/Misipawisitik/Moose Lake/Mosakahiken/Easterville/Chemawawin health district, three in the Flin Flon/Snow Lake/Cranberry/Sherridon health district and two in the Island Lake health district.

There are 164 people in Manitoba hospitals as a result of COVID-19 including 46 in intensive care units. Another nine Manitobans are in intensive care in Ontario. Twelve of Manitoba’s hospitalized people are northern residents and six of them are in intensive care.

Two more deaths from the virus were announced June 30, taking the total in the province since the pandemic began to 1,141.

The five-day test positivity rate is 6.2 per cent. 

Manitoba has now at least partially vaccinated more than 73 per cent of the eligible population and more than 40 per cent have received a second dose. In the north, 70.1 per cent of people 12 and over have now received at least one dose of COVID vaccine.
