Island Lake RCMP officers pepper sprayed and disarmed a man with a knife in Garden Hill First Nation March 26.

Police were called to assist First Nation Safety Officers who had entered a Garden Hill residence and been confronted by a man with a knife around 5:45 p.m. Thursday. RCMP attended via a winter road and found the suspect on the main road in Garden Hill. He was still armed with the knife and lunged at officers, who deployed a conducted energy weapon several times but it did not have any effect on the man.

Officers spoke to the man, who was threatening to harm himself, while waiting for more police to arrive, but he refused to put the knife down. An officer managed to distract the man, enabling another to discharge pepper spray, which led to the man dropping the knife and being taken into custody.

The suspect, a 29-year-old Garden Hill man, was taken to hospital and released. He is charged with two counts of assaulting a police officer, two counts of uttering threats, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and resisting arrest.

RCMP continue investigating.
