While horses may not be what immediately comes to mind for many when they think of Thompson, horses, like these at the riding stables, have a long history in both Northern Manitoba and other areas of the circumpolar north, including Iceland and northern Russia. Before bush planes and all-weather roads, stables of horses were kept at Churchill, Norway House, Wabowden, Cross Lake, Reed Lake, Ilford and Cranberry Portage, to name just a few such places, to haul freight in the winter.
