A seven-year-old child died in a Feb. 21 house fire in Garden Hill First Nation.
Island Lake RCMP were notified of the fire around 5 a.m. Friday and the house was already destroyed by the time they arrived at the scene.
Police learned an adult male first saw flames around 3 a.m. and attempted to evacuate the three adults and four children in the home at the time. One child was unaccounted for but residents couldn’t enter the building due to fire and smoke. The child’s body was found in what remained of the residence on Friday afternoon.
The Office of the Fire Commissioner is assisting Island Lake RCMP with the ongoing investigation.
