Adult students will now have the chance to earn additional high school credits or a diploma through University College of the North (UCN) post-secondary access centres in Tataskweyak Cree Nation at Split Lake and Mathias Colomb Cree Nation in Pukatawagan.

UCN said in a Feb. 18 press release that the provincial government has approved those two centres to offer high school credits, high school diplomas and strengthen prior learning.

“It gives me the opportunity to upgrade my learning skills,” said Pukatawagan student Darren Bighetty. “We can do this, so we can inspire other people in our community, that if I can do it you can do it.”

“My future goal is to continue my education so that I can become a good teacher like my instructor Lisa Flett,” said Skyler Spence, who is enrolled in the program in Split Lake. “I want to be a role model for my children and to make my family and friends proud.”

Flett, the Split Lake instructor, says the programs are an excellent opportunity for adult students.

“It is giving them essential skills they need in order to succeed in this world,” she said. “I am hoping they continue on with post-secondary studies after the successful completion of this program.”
