OTTAWA — Warren Craney is back as head coach of the Canadian men's junior football team.
Carney was named to the post on Friday by Football Canada. He will lead the squad into the world junior championship event which will be held June 20-30 in Edmonton.
Canada will chase a third straight gold medal in the tournament. Craney earned one of those in 2016 after leading the Canadian team to a silver medal in 2014.
Craney also earned a gold medal with Canada in 2012 as the junior team's defensive co-ordinator/ He holds the distinction of being the most decorated coach in the history of the International Federation of American Football world junior event.
"Warren Craney's experience and past successes make him the natural choice to lead our team as we strive to defend our championships on home soil this June," Football Canada president Jim Mullin said in a statement.
Craney, of Kirkland, Que., takes over head coaching duties from Steve Sumarah, who led Canada to gold in 2018. Craney was slated to be the 2024 team's special-teams co-ordinator before his appointment to the top job.
"Having served in this role before and working closely with coach Steve Sumarah, I anticipate a seamless transition as we prepare for the 2024 tournament in Edmonton," Craney said.
Also leaving the Canadian junior team will be defensive co-ordinator Jeff Cummins, who was also a member of the 2018 gold-medal squad.
Craney also served as the head coach at York University from 2010 to 2022. That followed a stint as the defensive co-ordinator at Concordia University.
